Assateague Island National Seashore is a protected area on a long barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. We camped in Assateague State Park which is right next to the National Park. The national Park has about 150 campsites but they have very limited amenities, no hookups and cold water showers. The state park has 350 sites, some with electric hookups and bathhouses, picnic tables, fire rings, and a camp store. The most famous residents of Assateague are the wild horses, also known as the Assateague ponies. These horses roam freely across the island and into the campgrounds.
