City of Rocks State Park gets its name from the incredible volcanic rock formations that rise dramatically from the desert floor. Located in the scenic Chihuahuan Desert region of southwestern New Mexico, the park sits at an elevation of 5,200 feet and covers about one square mile.
The “city” is a stunning geologic formation of massive, sculpted rock columns and pinnacles, some reaching up to 40 feet high, separated by natural pathways that resemble city streets. It’s a truly surreal landscape, unlike anywhere else.
The park is situated roughly halfway between Silver City and Deming, making it a convenient stop in a remote and peaceful part of the state. There are several camping options, including the Pegasus Campground, which has 41 sites, though only 4 have electric hookups. For a more rustic experience, there are first-come, first-served primitive sites nestled throughout the rocks.
City of Rocks also offers hiking trails, excellent mountain biking, and plenty of opportunities for stargazing under some incredibly dark skies.
