This unique park is located about 15 miles from Roswell, New Mexico, and is home to the famous Bottomless Lakes — which, despite the name, aren’t actually bottomless. The “lakes” are really sinkholes, formed by the collapse of underground limestone caves. There are nine lakes in total, with depths ranging from 17 to 90 feet.
The name “Bottomless Lakes” is said to have come from curious cowboys who tied their ropes together to try and measure the depth of the lakes. When the ropes didn’t reach the bottom, they assumed the water was endless. Adding to the illusion is the greenish-blue tint of the water, caused by algae and other aquatic plants, which gives the lakes a mysterious, almost otherworldly appearance
